Years of isolation and exploitation left their mark. Many countries face high levels of emigration, a demographic crisis, and deeply entrenched poverty, particularly in rural areas.

Throughout Europe, the marginalised Roma community face discrimination, poor access to educational and employment opportunities, a lack of amenities and adverse living conditions. More than 90% of Roma children are at risk of poverty.
Those living in deep poverty throughout Eastern Europe lack education, gainful employment and hope. Their living conditions are poor and there are few opportunities to create a better future for themselves.
Our staff and volunteers in each country understand the unique difficulties as well as rich potential in the areas where they work. Despite all the challenges, every day we hear encouraging stories about changed lives and renewed communities.
